Thanks to the Bauhaus and the Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Realm, Dessau is the only city one can find twice on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list. But of course the history of Dessau and the state Saxony-Anhalt are not limited to those important places: on about 900 square meters exhibition space in the former Dessau city castle Johannbau, the visitors can learn about the cultural and economic life of Saxony-Anhalt. Notable people who lived and worked in Dessau were for example Leopold I, Prince of Anhalt-Dessau, named „the Old Dessauer, the German Jewish philosopher Moses Mendelssohn, composer Kurt Weil, the German engineer and airplane designer Hugo Junkers as well as the Bauhaus teachers Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky and Walter Gropius.
